CIBIL Report··Updated

Someone else’s loan is showing on my PAN in the report

A loan you never took is sitting on your PAN. Do not ignore it and do not pay a fixer. Screenshot the line and dispute the facts.

The SMS landed first.

"Your loan application is under process. Amount 3,50,000. If you have not applied, ignore this message."

You were not looking for a speech. You wanted someone to point at one line on the report — or at the one paper the desk actually wants — and say what it means in ordinary English.

What that message is actually saying

Ignore-this-message is a weak comfort when the same account may already be on the bureau. The PAN is the key lenders use. If a file was opened with your PAN and someone else’s name — or your name and a product you never signed — the report will still carry it until someone disputes the facts with documents.

Lenders reuse short phrases because they are cheap to send. Policy norms, under review, minus applicable charges, visit branch: each one hides a list. Your job is to pull that list out of the PDF or the document packet, not to decode the officer's mood in the corridor.

Sit with a paper list of every loan and card you actually hold. Tick the report against the list. The leftover lines are the problem set. If one leftover is a tiny old two-wheeler from a cousin’s shop, still dispute it. Small balances still count as your burden on a policy grid. Tell the branch you have a dispute in flight only after you have a complaint number, not before.

The one report line to read first

Open the consumer report you downloaded from the official bureau path. Ignore the decorative score ring for a minute. Find this kind of line:

Account · Personal Loan · Member: XYZ Finance · Opened 11/2023 · Current balance 2,80,000 · You are not a signatory on any paper at home

This is the line that can sink a genuine home loan later. Ownership on a bureau trade line is not a vibe. It is a member-reported account. You need the member name, the account identifier they print, the open date, and the status. Those four fields go into the dispute. A police complaint may be needed if the account is truly not yours, but the bureau still wants their form plus ID.

Your PAN is not a suggestion. If that PAN is on the loan, bureaus will show it on your file until the lender corrects the upload. Paying a ‘clean chit’ agent does not send a legal correction. The lender who reported the line has to change it, or the dispute has to run.

Screenshot the error. Skip the 7-day score ads

Screenshot or print the full account block: member, account type, dates, amounts, and any associated phone or address. Photograph your PAN card separately, at home, not in a cyber cafe. Keep them in two folders so you do not WhatsApp the PAN with the report in one go to a stranger.

Anyone who says they will delete a trade line for a fee without going through the bureau dispute is not doing you a favour. Do not share remote-access apps ‘so they can clean CIBIL’.

If a page promises a score of 800 in seven days, close it. If a stranger wants remote access to 'clean CIBIL', close that too. The official bureau site and the lender that holds the account are the two doors that count. Everything else is noise with a PAN field.

Keep the screenshots in a folder named with the date. When you visit a branch, you are not performing. You are showing two or three pictures and asking which of those pictures they used.

What to do this week

  1. Circle every account you do not recognise. Do not mix them with old cards you forgot.
  2. Raise a dispute on the official bureau site for that trade line. Attach ID as they ask.
  3. Write to the member (the NBFC or bank named on the line) through their grievance email, with the same screenshots.
  4. If you never signed, consider a written complaint to the lender and, where facts support it, a police complaint. Keep copies.
  5. Do not keep applying for fresh loans while the ghost account is live. Each reject adds more enquiries.

Diagram for this problem

People assume a joint loan with a parent will never show. It will. People also assume a rejected application cannot become an account. Some pre-approved conversions and some mis-keyed PANs do land as accounts. Another mix-up: a similar name in the same city. The PAN match is the test, not the name vibe.

Leave these ideas aside

Do not pay the ghost EMI ‘just to make it go away’ unless a lawyer tells you that path is safer in your facts. Payment can look like you accepted the debt. Do not sign a settlement on an account you say is not yours without advice.

A helper blog cannot sit in the dispute queue for you. It cannot call recovery. It cannot promise a sanction. It can tell you to read the line, keep the screenshot, and use the official form.

If the file is personal — a court remark, a guarantee, a joint loan after a breakup — take the PDF to the lender and, where the facts are heavy, to a qualified adviser. Do not crowd-source the next step in a comment section.

A calm way to talk at the branch

Carry the SMS, the PDF page, and one proof (payment, offer letter, KYC, valuation slip — whichever this problem needs). Ask three questions only: which line they used, which document is missing, and whether a cool-off applies before you apply again. Write the answers in your notes app. That is a better meeting than a twenty-minute speech about how decent your salary feels on WhatsApp.

If they repeat "policy norms" and nothing else, use their grievance mail with the application number. You may still get a short code. The bureau page will still be more honest than the corridor.

FAQ

How long does a dispute take?

It varies. Some lines move in a few weeks. Some sit on pending. Keep the ticket number. A pending dispute is not the same as a deleted account, so lenders may still see the line.

Will the bank tell me who opened it?

They may share limited fields. You are entitled to dispute inaccurate data. Full investigation of a fraud is a lender plus police path, not a blog form.

Can I get a loan if I explain at the branch?

Some officers listen. Policy engines often do not. Clear the line or wait for the dispute result before a large home-loan file.

Is this always identity theft?

Not always. It can be a mistyped PAN, a mixed file, or a product you signed years ago and forgot. Start with documents, not with panic labels.

Short disclaimer

Loan Atka is not a bank and not a CIBIL office. Score formulas belong to the bureau. No article can guarantee approval, a deleted enquiry, or a higher number next week. The official report and the lender letter are final for your file. For a personal case, speak to the bank or NBFC that holds the account.
